Metered-Dose Inhaler
Metered-dose inhalers (MDI's) are devices that deliver a specific amount of medication in an aerosol form which is meant to be inhaled. They are used to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other problems.
Each inhaler consists of a pressurized canister of medication and a mouthpiece. Pressing down on the canister releases a mist of medicine that is to be inhaled. It is important that you use the MDI correctly so the correct amount of medicine is delivered. .
How do I use a MDI correctly?
A. Prepare the MDI for use by giving it a few shakes, and removing cap over the mouth piece.
B. Open mouth and hold head back slightly.
C. Exhale as completely as possible.
D. Aim the mouthpiece of the MDI towards your mouth. Do not close your mouth around the mouthpiece, as you will need to breath around it. You may put your front teeth on the mouthpiece if you like, however.
E. Start to breathe in through your mouth.
F. As soon as you begin to inhale, depress the canister, releasing a burst of medicine into your mouth.
G. Continue to inhale. The medicine will be drawn into the lungs.
H. Hold your breath for a few seconds.
I. For medications requiring 2 puffs, repeat the procedure in a minute or two.
NOTE: These instructions are for a metered-dose inhaler only. Inhaled dry powder capsules are used differently. To use a dry powder inhaler, close your mouth tightly around the mouthpiece of the inhaler and breathe in quickly. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about how to take your medicine.
